ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2022
**KATE STRINGER**
Member since: August 2021
Why did you join Brawn?
I know myself pretty well - what motivates me and what I can manage. After moving to the area I was looking for a gym with group fitness, that fitted in with my routine (work/kids) and was close to home. Although I’d never done cross fit, Brawn ticked all those boxes. I just want to be fit and healthy and to be able to move and do things as I get older.
Favourite cross fit movement:
I like box jumps
Favourite WOD:
I’m not really too good with all the WOD names but I like the chipper ones and the AMRAP ones. You should make this multiple choice 😉
Least favourite movements:
Running is not my favourite…especially when combined with no rest and lots of other cardio…which explains my least fav WOD
Least favourite WOD:
OMG - Kelly. I remember the name as I associated it with a person I once knew that I didn’t really care for 😂
Favourite cross fit tool:
Barbell & weights.
Results that you have achieved:
My fitness has improved a lot and I have lost a few kgs.
Occupation:
Manager, Information Governance
Do you have a nickname?
Kate, Katie, mum…
Hobbies:
Walking - with my dog or bush walks with friends. Audiobooks. Spending time with my family.
Favourite food/meal:
So many favourites. I do love a roast pork bun bowl though.
3 month fitness goal:
Keep turning up! Lose a few more kgs.
What’s something that we don’t know about you?
Probably a lot of things!
I grew up on a farm
I’m married with 4 sons
My next hobby will be kayaking
I used to be an Aussie Rules boundary umpire up in the NTFL
I used to play in the womens league on the NTFL and for some reason I was the ruck 🤷♀️
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go?
Brawn gives the opportunity to try before you commit, give it a go, nothing to lose and what you can gain is up to you.

Athlete of the Month September - Gemma Tye
Congratulations to our September athlete of the month- Gemma Tye
Gemma has been with us from the start, she was one of our first members and has been a loyal and consistent member for over 6 years. Gem has shown great discipline and dedication to her training, whether its bringing her two girls in with her or choreographing a changeover with her husband James, she shows that if its important to you, you can make it happen. She hits the gym at least 4 times a week consistently and one of the most amazing things she's done is train through 2 pregnancies right up until the end and then following it up with a quick recovery.
Always loving the social side of the gym and consistently helping out with our Battle of the Brawn Comps, Gem is a very appreciated member of our community.
Congrats again Gem!!

What’s something that we don’t know about you? I was a SASI athlete in basketball / went to the youth Olympics
Why did you choose CrossFit? Needed a change from the standard gym
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? Everyone has a perception of crossfit, especially for women. However having trained through my 2 pregnancies right up until a week before and with my second, back 5 weeks after a c-section it proves anyone can do it. Just give it a try and you will be hooked and the vibe at Brawn also makes it easy.
Last PR achieved: think it was my Deadlift or my hang clean

Initially brought in to the box by his partner Brit, Pauly has been with us a little under a year now and hasn’t looked back.

Why did you choose CrossFit? Britt wouldn’t stop talking about it, I had to make sure she didn’t get stronger then me
Last PR achieved: Bar muscle up!
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving Crossfit a go? How good it has been for my mental health! People often pair exercise with trying to transform your body but the biggest change for me has been mentally.

Athlete of the month MARCH 2019 - AMY AIRD
March athlete of the month is Amy Aird!....
Amy started with us through the Active Mums classes and soon after decided to jump into a WOD. She's been so consistent with her training and it's clear it's become an important part of her life and routine. From this commitment has come numerous PR's and has also started completing multiple WOD's RX'd. Amy always has a great attitude and smile no matter what's dished up to her in a WOD.
Keep it up Amy and look forward to seeing you and Gem in your first comp later in the year. 😉
Member since: early 2018 (Active mums before that)
Favourite cross fit movement: Love learning the oly lifts, and love anything for the legs and bunssss! Don’t mind the rower too…
Favourite WOD: Chipper style
Least favourite movements: Toes to bar
Least favourite WOD: Anything with running or the AD
Favourite cross fit tool: A ‘give it a go’ attitude! 😉
Results that you have achieved: No more back pain and way better posture
Occupation: Hydrogeologist
Do you have a nickname? ‘Roachy’ or unfortunately, also known to some as the ‘Wrecking Ball’
Hobbies: Crossfit! Family time, reading, photography (trying to teach myself to take a decent shot), singing, and would it be weird/sad to say “tidying up”?
Favourite food/meal: All the Asian food, coffee, wine, gin, cocktails… oh wait, you didn’t ask about drinks
3 month fitness goal: Link two toes to bar
What’s something that we don’t know about you? There’s not much I keep to myself… but you probably haven’t heard the story yet about the time I got detained and interrogated at border control and deported from the UK due to an innocent series of unfortunate events...
Why did you choose CrossFit? I had wanted to try Crossfit for quite a few years but with injury (back and both knees) and pregnancy, my body wasn’t quite ready for it. After having Isla, I wanted something to get me back into exercise and get my body (and mind) back, and Gem convinced me to come and try Active mums. Isla hated it but I loved it! Then I finally got the courage up to do the ‘real deal’!
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving Crossfit a go? Stop thinking about it and do it! I honestly can’t imagine myself ever giving Crossfit up now. I have never felt better physically or within myself. Hitting PRs gives me confidence and gives me more drive to keep coming back. It’s become a part of my lifestyle and the crew have become awesome friends too.
Last PR achieved: Got one today actually- hit a 57.5kg Clean and Jerk. But the PR that I’m most proud of…. Getting an unassisted chin up! Oh and getting ‘Athlete of the Month’ is pretty bloody good too.

Athlete of the month JANUARY 2019 - SARAH DIZZY WILTON
January member of the month..... SARAH DIZZY WILTON
Dizzy has been a Brawn faithful since the early days, initially joining to increase her fitness for netball. Since then she hasn’t looked back, even sharing the Brawn love by getting numours friends and netball crew involved along for the way!
Always putting in 100% and bringing a positive vibe to the box, an all around legend!
Congratulations Dizz!
Favourite cross fit movement: power clean
Favourite WOD: any 12’days of Christmas WOD.
Least favourite movements: Airdyne. Does that count as a “movement”?
Least favourite WOD: flight simulator! (Seeya, Calves).
Favourite cross fit tool: Chalk. Often believed to have gained employment at bakers delight, post-wod.
Results that you have achieved: Although I retired from netball at the end of last season, while I was playing, CrossFit made a huge impact on my ability to play at my best. I can attribute a lot of my good fortune in remaining injury free to having been a member at Brawn. Thanks guys.
Occupation: Teacher
Do you have a nickname? Do I have a real name?! Dizzy.
Hobbies: Being a full time coffee & sports enthusiast and getting to the snow at any opportunity.
Favourite food/meal: My strange addiction: popcorn.
3 month fitness goal: to master the butterfly pull-up and link my toes to bar..
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I’ve been around long enough, so there probably isn’t much..
Why did you choose CrossFit? My training routine was fairly bland and repetitive. I was looking for something different and I wanted to take my fitness to the next level for netball (at the time). I’m someone who enjoys being around people and within a team environment to stay motivated, so CrossFit seemed like something I would enjoy. I convinced old mate Emdawg that we should go along to brawn.. and here we are 5 years on!
Last PR achieved: sumo deadlift
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? Just go for it-you won’t regret it. Joining up at brawn in 2013 was one of the best decisions I ever made and I’ve never looked back. It might take you five years to get a gig as “member of the month” but when you get the call up, it’s worth the wait.

Athlete of the month OCTOBER - AMY McDONALD
Congratulations to Amy McDonald on being our athlete of the month.
It’s been super impressive to see Amy's transformation in such a short amount of time. After an initial stint getting back into exercise with active mums, Amy has been one of our most consistent members who continually raises her own bar by setting and breaking new pr’s. With 2 kids and a demanding work schedule, in a little over a year Amy has gone from barely touching a barbell to competing in her first CrossFit comp, back squatting over 90kg and matching her partner Liam in some lifts!
Great work Amy!
"never ask a writer to write...it's a bit long , but it's been a nice distraction from my real writing today!"
Member since: Active Mums since April 2017. Full member since September 2017.
Favourite crossfit movement: Back squats, deadlifts, wall balls, box jumps, squat cleans, sled push, weighted step ups – all the glute and hamstring stuff! I also have a special spot for double unders because they’re symbolic of my post-baby #2 recovery.
Favourite WOD: I quite liked Badger, and anything that involves a 1km run or two.
Least favourite movements: Shoulder press, bench press. Also Turkish Get Up, makes me feel like a baby giraffe tying to stand up for the first time.
Least favourite WOD: That pull up/thruster & run 200m every 2 minutes thing last week.
Favourite cross fit tool: Skipping rope.
Results that you have achieved: Strength improvements all round. I’d never touched a barbell and when I started I could barely lift a 7kg dumbbell overhead. Definitely muscle tone; I’ve always been thin but looking back now I was neither fit, nor strong.
Occupation: Submarine and warship spin doctor
Do you have a nickname? Ames. Mum.
Hobbies: Politics. Crossfit. Running. Being with my kids and family.
Favourite food/meal: Soft shell crab. Liam’s thai oysters.
3 month fitness goal: To start stringing toes to bar together in WODs, 60kg jerk and to work on snatch technique. Also do better with my nutrition.
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I can eat my body weight in sushi and pizza. I’ve always thought I’d be good at one of those hot dog eating competitions. Though it probably doesn’t align with my fitness goal above….
Why did you choose CrossFit? I’ve always been active (netball, running, triathlon) but it all became “too hard” after I had our first child and the excuses became too easy. It was the first time in my life when I didn’t make exercise a priority and my mental health suffered as a result. So I was determined to get back running after our second baby but I ended up with a pelvic floor injury and couldn’t for quite some time. I still wanted (and needed) to build strength but it had to be something that could fit around the kids. Liam had been going to Brawn for about 18 months and had been on at me to start going but I resisted for ages because I thought it was all about tyre flipping. But when I found out about Active Mums it just made sense. It was a great gentle transition back into exercise and JP, Jason and Char were very understanding of my limitations and Active Mums, combined with the extensive work I did with my physio, got my body back in shape and back running. I keep doing it now because my life is hectic with a demanding full time job and two young kids but my one hour in the box every morning is the only time I get to myself where I don’t’ have to think - I just have to pick up heavy stuff and chuck it back down. I also love being around likeminded people. I find that people who are willing to put themselves in situations where they have to suffer day in and day out are my kind of people.
Last PR achieved: Lots of gold stars as I keep improving but I’m most proud of my 92.5kg back squat a month ago and equalling my 62.5kg clean PR on Saturday after a 1km row. I’m also stoked that I’m starting to do more WODs Rx than not.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? Don’t think about doing it, just do it. You’re never going to regret what strength training does to your mind and body. Once you get there, park any thoughts of what you thought about fitness and learn to be comfortable outside your comfort zone because that’s where the magic happens. The coaches are awesome and will help you understand your limits and scale things to suit your ability, and then when you’re ready they’ll be there to help you test your limits too. Trust them and the process!

Athlete of the month - August 2018 - Andrew Gluyas
I’ve been a CFB member since may 2013. The box was still a bit raw back then, in fact brand new. I made it through to Christmas that year then stuffed up my back putting a basketball ring together. (acting as Santa Clause).
I had a second stint in 2016 before getting a slack attack and then went for a long spell.
This time I resumed in March so I have been back for 5 months and it has been the best move I could have made.
My favourite CF movement would have to be anything to do with the bar. Lifting is simple but doing it properly takes some concentration and is tricky to perfect. When you think you’ve got it you can run out of form or go a bit heavy or just soften in the mind. Getting to know the techniques of lifting is rewarding and one day I’ll combine skill, strength and timing and get it right.
My favourite Wod might be Fran I reckon. I haven’t done it for ages and I am a long way off any rx attempt. Weak thrusters and brutal chin ups leave me some work to do here but it’s a sprint that finds the bottom of you real quick. Spicy!
Otherwise, the core work of the monthly Brawn Wod benchmarks are great.
My least favourite movement would have to be skipping. Singles, doubles, high knee alternating warm ups whatever. Rubbish - leave me out!
My favourite cross fit “tools” would have to be JP and Jason. The Brawn boys fire you up, show you the way, give out tips, correct lousy form, spin the disks, take the photos, shoot the shit and lift it, etc, etc. Massive tools = good fun and they create a great team environment.
The JP standard greeting of “here he is” turns into another well led session with a few laughs and plenty of sweating. Outstandingly good work fellas, keep it up!
Regarding personal results, just walking through the door is a result for me. I’ve used Brawn to initiate a bit of a lifestyle change and things have sharpened up since I’ve been coming, its been great. Following the daily sessions and putting the work in gets results.
I work as a Horse Trainer. I’m set up at Morphettville racecourse and work in a small family business with my father in law.
Nickname - Glue or Gluey.
Hobbies - I occasionally play around with the guitar but unfortunately I am completely talentless an unable to entertain anyone but myself.
Favourite food - Hard boiled eggs.
My three month fitness goal is simply to keep turning up. Pushing the door open at midday and keeping on having a crack. Working on my mobility and fitness and helping my wellbeing is what it’s about for me.
What’s something that you don’t know about me. I occasionally fundraise for Laurel Palliative Care Hospice. Laurel provide quality end of life care. Extra funds help the patients and their families at a difficult time. Complimentary care, art therapy, massage and many other extra services help people through this tough journey.
I chose CFB as my fitness option as I needed a group style program that mixed things up. A good choice I reckon.
My last PR was a strict press I think.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go?
For first timers to crossfit or people that are thinking about taking it up, I can only encourage them to do so. The program works, the Brawners know their stuff and the team will get around you and help you through the start up. The CF language can be a bit weird to start with and the wods can be intimidating at first (especially when the athletes are smashing a blizkrieg Wod around you) but all the movements can be scaled and any movement will steer you in the right fitness direction. Build on the basic movements, be prepared to push yourself, honour technique, work through the niggles and the only way is up!

Athlete of the month - JUNE 2018 - Alana Zanardo
Congratulations to Alana for winning athlete of the month for June. Alana has been training with us from late 2015 and has see some huge improvements in all areas. Training consistently Alana has improved her upper body strength immensely as well as taking her conditioning to a high level. What’s something that we don’t know about you? I LOVE reading books / watching shows about drug crime. I really want a sausage dog. Also, the sound of a motorbike tearing down the street actually makes my blood boil.
Why did you choose CrossFit? Dizzy kept trying to get me to join for over a year.. eventually she got the netball club doing preseason there so I had no choice..
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? JUST DO IT!! Prior to joining I was quite intimidated and always thought it was super hard-core athletes & workouts.. but it really is for everyone and I haven’t looked back since! ALL THE FUN!!
Last PR achieved: Monday, but most proud would be 1RM Snatch after an ongoing shoulder niggle and avoiding these movements for so long #noodles

Athlete of the month - MARCH 2018 - Soykan Saenem
Well, its finally happened. This months athlete of the month needs no introduction.
Since joining over 4 years ago, Soy has lived and breathed everything CFB and has been one of most consistent members day in day out. You’d be hard pressed finding someone that loves Crossfit more than soy. Known for his freakish bodyweight capacity, slick technique and not minding a bit of a chat, Soy is genuinely one of the nicest guys you’ll come across.
You’ll find Soy crushing WOD’s at the 4:30 class 5 days a week or 6:00 straight after at anytime for some tricep pushdowns.
Keep being you mate and lets see some scores up on the board!
Great work Soy!

Athlete of the month - JANUARY 2018- BEL SMART
A BIG Congratulations to Bel Smart for winning our January Athlete of the month!
Bel has been a silent achiever, rocking up consistently to the Arvo WOD's with no fuss, getting some great results with a great attitude!
She puts in 100% no matter what the challenge. She's improved across the board in all areas over the last year or so and particularly has improved a lot in her barbell movements.
A pleasure to have you at the BOX Bel, keep up the great work!!
Member since: Preseason with woods end of 2015/16 but became an actual member some time in 2016
Favourite crossfit movement: Power Clean/Clean & Jerk
Favourite WOD: Anything with box jumps
Least favourite movements: Thrusters!
Least favourite WOD: Anything with thrusters
Favourite crossfit tool: a box
Results that you have achieved: Just feeling a lot stronger within myself, physically and mentally. Use to be a lot more negative but now I can look at stuff and think maybe ‘I can do this’ and even if I can’t, it’s not the end of the world!
Occupation: Programs Coordinator
Do you have a nickname? Just Bel ....... (ding dong)
Hobbies: Taking the pups for a walk, love coaching netball, never use to read but recently decided to pick up a book!
Favourite food/meal: sweet potato for sure
3 month fitness goal: To do as many WODs as I can RX
What’s something that we don’t know about you? Never broken a bone
Why did you choose CrossFit? Well I didn’t actually pick it, the netball club chose CrossFit for our preseason and after 2 seasons realised how much I enjoyed it. I’ve always liked high intensity stuff but CrossFit just took the cake. It never gets boring & I love how I get to do new stuff I’ve never done before and just try to improve on them!
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? Just do it!!! It may not be for everyone but you have to give things a go to know. The trainers & the people, the equipment, the atmosphere, every box might be different but I cannot say one bad word about Brawn specifically and I’m pretty sure the majority of members feels the same way
Last PR achieved: Last week tried rope climbs for the first time, didn’t think I could/was strong enough but gave it a go & did 2! Rope burn totally worth it

Athlete of the month - DECEMBER 2017- GREG ANDERSON
The humblest of humblest, GREG ANDERSON!!, congratulations on being our athlete of the month for DECEMBER!
Greg has been training with us for the last 3 years and has been one of most consistent, hard-working members!
With hair to die for, Ando has got some serious gains in all areas especially his strength and mobility in his squat, not to mention his freakish overhead strength! His great work ethic shows by smashing out some extra accessory work (bench press) after a WOD, always pulling in a couple of other guys to do some extra work!
This work ethic, his encouragement to his fellow members and humility is what makes him such a popular figure around the box.
What a LEGEND
Great Job ANDO!!

What’s something we don’t know about you:
In 1975, I was in a commercial for Australian Motors. I was the newspaper boy holding up the paper yelling out “Extra, Extra, read all about it. Great Guys do it again!” I used to get recognised as “That newspaper kid!”. I think I got paid about $12.50 for it!
Why did you choose Crossfit:
So I could beat Peter. I noticed he was getting too fit for my liking!
What words of advice would you give to anyone wanting to give Crossfit a go:
Get your technique right and listen to the coaches.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - November

Josh Story
Over 4 years in the making, congratulations to one of our long time members JOSH STORY!
Storz is like part of the furniture at brawn, very much a local working a couple blocks down at Desyn Homes. Builder by day, Crossfitter by night and home renos later that night! Joshy is always on the go but still puts in 100% when he's at the box throwing down at the 5:30 session. Over the years he has hit some monstrous lifts on the barbell, is always an absolute demon on the AB and row and handles his own on the gymnastic side of things quite well for a big unit. Fitness isn't the only thing Josh has found at Brawn ;) Pairing up with Tamara for more than just a partner WOD. Truly one of the nicest guys going around the box, hats off to this legend for taking out the last member of the month for 2017!

Favourite cross fit movement: Cleans and the odd Jerk
Favourite WOD:Most of them once I’ve recovered
Least favourite movements: Burpees
Least favourite WOD: Anything with Burpees
Favourite cross fit tool: Barbell
Results that you have achieved: Strength in my legs that help support my bad knee, My knee is feeling great.
Occupation: Builder
Do you have a nickname? Storz, Stalker, Story, Tall Story, Likely Story, What-sa Story, Big Dog
Hobbies: Sports, renovating
Favourite food/meal: Steak
3 month fitness goal: Keep active and maintain the fitness
What’s something that we don’t know about you: I was a professional fisherman/deckhand on a cray fishing boat for a season.
Why did you choose CrossFit: I chose Crossfit because I needed to find something that would get my heart rate up, I can’t run because of my knee so I was short of options in the gym. After first walking into Brawn, immediately I felt I was in the right place and the coaches didn’t make me feel any less than welcome even though I couldn’t do some movements due to my knee. Straight away I was achieving goals and noticing results.
Last PR achieved: last PR was a 75kg snatch for 2 reps. Snatch’s haven’t been my best movement.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go: Just give it a shot, don’t be afraid to walk in with no idea what to do. The hardest thing is walking in that door for the first time, once you do, you’ll be glad you did. And ladies, Crossfit doesn’t make you bulky so don’t use that as an excuse.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH -
OCTOBER ..... Teresa Humphris
I joined in feb/March this year
My favourite movement would be deadlifts
My favourite WOD would be ‘the Don’ or any of the corearama workouts.
My least favourite movements would be OHS or the bikes..
Least favourite WOD ones that contain both those movements!!
Fav crossfit tool - the chalk or wrist straps!
Reach my goal of lift over 100kgs after 3 months at the gym and managed muscle ups after 4ish months! I haven’t ‘lost’ weight since starting but my body shape has definitely changed/toned and my fitness level has massively increased!
Occupation - police
Nickname - Wally
Hobbies - basketball, netball, volleyball
Fav food/meal - slow cooked silverside with roast veggies! (& I do enjoy a feel good iced coffee 😳)
3 month goal is to dead lift 120kg (double my body weight)
Something most ppl don’t know - i dropped out of uni after doing 6 months to build Victa lawnmowers!!
I joined crossfit because Will harassed me for 4 years to ‘workout’ with him (I think it was his ‘nice’ way of telling me I had let myself go a bit after having kids!! 😂)
Last PR - probably last nights jerk/split combo of 62.5... I think my heaviest OH lift was around 50kgs.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving Crossfit a go?
It’s a great, fun environment - nothing at all like a gym and everyone is really supportive. It’s the best way I have been able to achieve weight loss and fitness goals!
Thanks! 😊

Thanks! 😊
ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - JULY 2017..... Chris Jordan
Member since: January 2014
Favourite cross fit movement: Any Clean or Snatch Movement. Also a fan of hand stand push ups.
Favourite WOD: Nancy was the first one I ever did so I’ll always have a soft spot for her!
Least favourite movements: Anything gymnastic. My flexibility is terrible but I’m working on it slowly.
Least favourite WOD: No least favourite but chippers get to me mentally. The ‘Don’ benchmark earlier this month left me in a terrible dark hole!
Favourite cross fit tool: My roller first thing in the morning gets the back straight before a WOD!
Results that you have achieved: I dropped 16kgs in my first 3 months at Crossfit Brawn and lost 5 inches off my waist along with a continual improvement in hip strength which has done me well while playing footy. Using Crossfit as my main rehab after my knee recon in 2015 allowed me to return to footy after 50 weeks on the sidelines. Competing in BOB 7 and finishing 1st in the scaled teams was awesome as well.
Occupation: Sales Manager
Do you have a nickname? CJ
Hobbies: Footy/ Crossfit
Favourite food/meal: I like anything meaty- BBQ’s, Ribs, Chicken Wings
3 month fitness goal: I’d love to be able to do ring muscle ups consistently and pull off my first bar muscle up. It’s been years in the making! Along with that being able to do a handstand walk of any distance would be unreal!
What’s something that we don’t know about you? After I left school I was a full time shearer for 4 years from the age of 17 until I was 21 before I moved to Adelaide.
Why did you choose CrossFit? I moved interstate for work for a year and in that time I didn’t play footy and I let me gym time slip but kept eating the way I normally do. When I got back to Adelaide and had the chance to get back into sport I needed to improve my fitness quickly and lose weight badly. I chose Crossfit as a great all round fitness regime that would give me what I needed in the shortest amount of time with a list of physical benefits that would help me along the way in all facets of my life both sporting and personal. Haven’t looked back since.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving Crossfit a go? Just do it. Celebrate your own achievements and don’t take any notice of what others are doing around you. Notice and acknowledge your own improvements, work on your weaknesses and don’t be selective in what WOD’s you attend. Just get in and do the best you can. Even completing your worst performance and weakest exercise or movement will leave you feeling a great sense of achievement. Staying in bed gets your nowhere.
Last PR achieved: 105kg Power Clean at BOB 8

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2017
ATHLETE OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH is.........Lisa Geddes
Lisa's (GEDfit) has been thriving in the WOD's and our BOX community. She's a trainer herself and has recently been hitting up our lunchtime WOD's on an extremely consistent basis. Lisa has got some great results and at the same time has kept her ego at bay and ensured she's always focused on technique first. With a tendency to cry during deadlifts and a hard work ethic she is well on her way to taking her fitness above and beyond her expectations. She's currently on "holiday" completing a 85km running tour around NZ, as you do!
Keep GEDding Fit GEDDES!!
Member since: January (drop ins since nov)
Favourite cross fit movement: Deadlift / pull up
Favourite WOD: haven't liked one of JPs yet but 16.4 thrusters and burpees
Least favourite movements: double unders/HSPU
Least favourite WOD: that one with bulk OHS where I got pins and needles in my arm cause my mobility was so offensive
Favourite cross fit tool: chalk
Results that you have achieved: increased 47 reps in March retest (Fight gone BAD)
Occupation: Owner GEDfit - PT and Small group training
Do you have a nickname? GEDsfit (according to j Wagner)
Hobbies: trail running / adventures
Favourite food/meal: BREAKFAST! Smoothie + eggs avo spinach and yummy bread.
3 month fitness goal: compete in a crossfit comp and run another half mara
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I am blind AF and wear contact lenses and love GEDding FIT!
Why did you choose CrossFit? I have always loved cross training but I was always a little hesitant in actually signing up to a crossfit box. After dropping into many, Brawn was the standout. I absolutely love the vibe - bangers playing always, ridiculously hard WODs that have science behind their programming, the legit coaches who provide banter but solid coaching and the healthy competition with other members.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? I genuinely don't know a better feeling than being fit and I love how crossfit pushes you beyond your perceived capabilities.
Last PR achieved: 140kg deadlift

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - FEBRUARY 2017
Athlete of the month for FEBRUARY 2017 is : RYAN SHAW
"ROSSCO" has been with us for just over 3 months and has been an absolute workhorse!
He consistently rocks up to around 5 WOD's every week at 6am!
This consistency and dedication has seen him lose 10kgs and really turn his health and fitness around!
Sometimes the hardest part is getting started and Ryan has shown with some dedication, consistency and some small changes to his lifestyle you can get some serious long lasting results in a short time frame!
Well done mate!!
Member since: November 2016
Favourite cross fit movement: Deadlift
Favourite WOD: Anything cardio based
Least favourite movements: Overhead Squats
Least favourite WOD: Any WOD with lots of squatting
Favourite cross fit tool: Barbell / Chalk!
Results that you have achieved: Have lost nearly 10kgs, increased strength and mobility is improving.
Occupation: Construction Manager
Do you have a nickname? Rossco
Hobbies: Football, Golf, Hanging at the beach.
Favourite food/meal: Mexican
3 month fitness goal: Continue to work on my mobility and lifting technique. Minimise scaling of WOD’s.
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I’m about as colour-blind as a human can get.
Why did you choose CrossFit? My wife had done Crossfit for a couple of years and convinced me to give it a go, I had seen the results her and other friends have achieved and always liked the format of the workouts etc. I generally based my fitness around long cardio sessions mainly running and the short intense workouts Crossfit offer that incorporate weights and a variety of movements are great and challenging.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving CrossFit a go? The hardest part is stepping out of your comfort zone and attending your first session. I can confidently say that once you have you won’t look back. The coaching, support and encouragement received is second to none. The crew you work-out with are great and the vibe in the gym is always awesome.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH- DECEMBER 2016
Athlete of the month for December 2016 is : SONIA KOLPAK
Sonia has been with us for just over a year and started in our 6 week challenge group which really kick started her transfromation. She then moved into the WOD's consistently showing up with a smile to the 6am sessions 4-5 times a week. Sonia has improved in all areas including her strength, cardiovascular fitness and she's looking great.
Well Done Sonia!!!
Member since: January 2016
Favourite cross fit movement: Back squat and Push Press
Favourite WOD: No favourite, I just love the variety of the WODs
Least favourite movements: Assault bike
Least favourite WOD: anything that includes lots of AD cals
Favourite cross fit tool: The music, barbell, Wodify and my CF shoes.
Results that you have achieved: Lots! But if I were to pick one, I would have to say my strength has increased dramatically from when I first started.
Occupation: Chartered Accountant 🤓
Do you have a nickname? Son, Sonny, Soz, SoKo, Dada😉
Hobbies: CrossFit, cooking, chasing the sun
Favourite food/meal: Greek, Italian & Thai food; raspberries…….ohhh, and champagne
3 month fitness goal: Gold stars (PR's) and a Pull-up with no band
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I’m an April Fool
Why did you choose CrossFit? Before I started CrossFit I'd been doing the same bootcamp for 2 years. My results had plateaued and it was time for a change. I wanted to try something more challenging but also wanted to continue training in a supportive group environment, so I gave CrossFit a go and haven’t looked back.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? Get amongst it! I was scared at first, didn’t understand the lingo and almost died in my first session. I know that my weights are nowhere near what some girls are lifting, but I am constantly challenging myself and improving every day. I am super proud (and amazed!) at how far I’ve come. The coaches offer great support and encouragement and I train with an awesome bunch of people.

Athlete of the month - OCTOBER
Athlete of the month for October is LOUISE JOLLEY!
Lou first came into contact with us to break through a training rut and try something new with our outdoor 6 week challenge groups before finally transitioning into the WOD's. Since then she's fully converted and made some amazing transformations, also getting her partner in crime David on board along the way. Rain, hail or shine, Lou has been one of our most consistent members always giving it a 100% and continues to improve and always has a Jolley old time doing so!
Member since: January 2016
Favourite Crossfit movement: I must say I do like a deadlift!
Favourite WOD: I loved the Mayhem chipper! It was my first WOD where I learnt that going as fast as you can is not always the right way. Sometimes stopping getting your breath back resetting and going again is a better option. It was also probably my best bench mark retest time too!
Least favourite movements: anything involving wall balls
Least favourite WOD: anything involving wall balls
Favourite cross fit tool: the skipping rope, even though when I'm using it I hate it!!
Results that you have achieved: weight loss, improved fitness and a complete new look at the way I train
Occupation: police officer 👮
Do you have a nickname? Cheese
Hobbies: cooking cleaning and looking after David
Favourite food/meal: steak!
3 month fitness goal: To keep pushing my weights. I usually shy away from adding on the extra kgs and tell myself it's too heavy!
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I really don't like to play monopoly
Why did you choose CrossFit?
I started the 6 week boot camp in January as I was really struggling to lose weight after my second baby and couldn't find anything that worked or I enjoyed. During the 6 weeks i joined in on a few WODS and even though I couldn't understand what the workout was or how I should be lifting I knew I was going to get involved with it. The weight loss, improved fitness, great coaching and friendly atmosphere got me hooked and I've not looked back since!
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go?
I never thought crossfit was for me I mean I was trying to lose weight not gain massive muscles. But I soon realised that weights were my friends and they have helped me get back to where I was before having kids, to be honest I'm in better shape now then I've ever been thanks to crossfit. Its the only time that I can totally forget about my hectic life and just focus on what needs to be done! It's an addictive game but you've got to be in it to win it 😉
Last PR achieved: back squats at 72.5kg

Athlete of the month - JULY
July's athlete of the month is..... Dazz Camilleri!
Lunchtime legend Dazz is a Crossfit Brawn OG and has been with us since day one! Always super consistent but has really stepped it up into second gear as of late crushing some massive numbers in his lifts and conquering some of the more technically challenging movements like OHS and muscleups along the way... not bad for a bloke that had the mobility of tinman when he started!
Whether it be a bit of WOD banter, whipping out the Dazz Cam or just bit of a yarn he certainty knows how to make training fun and is a great example that persisting will equate to progressing.
Keep at it legend..... Yeah, yeah!
Member since: Mid to late 2012- back in the days of the brawn garage gym
Favourite cross fit movement: Cleans and anything with a kettlebell
Favourite WOD: Elizabeth
Least favourite movements: Handstand push ups, slowly becoming friends with overhead squats!
Least favourite WOD: Anything where high rep deadlifts and handstand push ups are involved together
Favourite cross fit tool: Kettlebell, barbell and my collection of shoes
Results that you have achieved: Going from training at the gym 5 days a week, to mixing gym & CrossFit, then switching to CrossFit full time I have gained big improvements in all areas.
Occupation: Business Owner / Technician
Do you have a nickname? Dazz
Hobbies: Motocross / Crossfit / Travel and listening to podcasts
Favourite food/meal: A good gourmet burger or Thai
3 month fitness goal: Continue on the path I’m on and work harder on my mobility to help improve
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I have a pet kangaroo
Why did you choose CrossFit? A class was being held in the basement of my old gym, by none other than JP! I was hooked pretty quick, you could say it choose me!
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? First thing is to just turn up, give it a try, and then keep turning up. If you come to CrossFit your time will be more efficiently used and you’ll get better results. At the same time, you’re training with like-minded people, and pushing your limits further than you think you are capable of. No need to be scared off, movements can be adjusted (scaled) to suit every person… what price do you put on your health, give it a try, you will love it and the results speak for themselves.
PR achieved: 200kg Deadlift

If you come to CrossFit your time will be more efficiently used and you’ll get better results. At the same time, you’re training with like-minded people, and pushing your limits further than you think you are capable of. No need to be scared off, movements can be adjusted (scaled) to suit every person… what price do you put on your health, give it a try, you will love it and the results speak for themselves.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - JUNE 2016
Athlete of the month for June is......Mel Baum!
What a well deserved winner, Mel comes from a body building background and she has really embraced CrossFit and the difference in training style. This and being consistent in her approach has rubbed off in her results and performance in the box. She's been a true gun and has just recently competed in Battle of the Brawn 6... coming in 4th place in scaled teams. Not a bad effort considering she only started Crossfit late last year.
Well done Mel, keep kicking goals!

3 month fitness goal: After a couple of slower months due to an injury, keen to really get back into it and focus more on my physical strength and endurance as well as my olympic lifting technique.
What’s something that we don’t know about you? I was a contestant on the price is right haha walked away with a sweet unknown brand TV and Surround System!
Why did you choose CrossFit? After a many years doing bodybuilding I was bored and looking for a new challenge and something different.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? The best decision I've made in a long time was organising a trial at Brawn 6 months ago. Didn't think I'd know anyone who trained there either, turns out Adelaide is a very small place. Amazing coaches and an awesome bunch of people to train with and push you to your limits and you literally walk out knowing you gave 100% and had absolutely nothing left to give! Never got that from getting my pump on without even working up a sweat or swapping Arnold Schwarzenegger inspirational quotes over post gym protein shakes.
Last PR achieved: 105kg Back Squat

What’s something that we don’t know about you? I once played a gig supporting The Black Keys.
Why did you choose CrossFit? My brother in law (a cross-fitter) gave me the hard sell and it sounded interesting. After a 2 hour intro session, JP threw me in the deep end starting me off with my first WOD being Kelly. I haven't looked back since.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? Bite the bullet sign up and everyone will welcome you with open arms. Stick with it for at least 2 months and you won't look back.

September 2015 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER's ATHLETE OF THE MONTH is KELLY WOODROW!!
Kelly has been with us since December last year and was introduced to us by her friend Kate who came along with her to all of her beginner sessions for support. Over the past 10 months Kelly has been extremely consistent with her attendance. It has been great seeing Kel's confidence go up as well as her results in the gym. Kel's attitude has been great the whole time and deserves a big shout out for getting outside of her comfort zone and giving it a go. So great to see you smiling and hitting constant PR's Kel!! Keep up the great work
Member since: Dec 2014
Fave CF movement: Lifting from the racks. Maybe a push press, I still don't really know the names
Fave WOD: MURPH
Least fave movements: ones I can't do! Anything to do with handstands
Least fave WOD: MURPH haha
Fave CF tool: bands to help me do pull ups and stretch out sore muscles
Results I've achieved: I've really had to work on my range of movement, so getting deeper squats has been a big achievement. Actually being able to do girl push ups now instead of wall ones!
Occupation: teacher
Nickname: (not really) Kel
Hobbies: Crossfit, tv, movies, catching up with friends, traveling, watching AFL
Fave food: chocolate
3 month fitness goal: keep achieving pbs and tone up
Something you don't know about me: I have a cat called Ned.
Why did I choose Crossfit: My friend from interstate gave me introductory sessions for my birthday and came along with me and I got addicted.
Advice to someone thinking about CF: Definitely give it a go. I hated the gym and working out until I came to Brawn. Get a friend to come with you, that's how I got the courage to come. And you really don't need to be very fit, the coaches adapt movements for you, I started with air squats and wall push ups!!
Jason and JP make you feel really welcome and it's a great team atmosphere

Working around various prior ailments Pete has a great attitude every time he walks into the box and gives it 110% every WOD. Big congrats to Pete for competing in the OPEN for the first time this year with an awesome 11th place in the Masters 55-59 age group in Australia.

What’s something that we don’t know about you? Enjoy driving the iconic outback tracks and so far have done the Birdsville, Oodnadatta, Strezlecki and the Savannah Way and in August this year will tackle the Telegraph Track on the way to "Tip" of Australia.
Why did you choose CrossFit? A colleague at work who thought I would like it hounded me for 12 months until I gave it a go.
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? If your new to crossfit do the elements program to give you exposure to the functional movements and then progress to the WOD sessions you'll enjoy the challenges, variety and the great crossfit community.

december 2014 athlete of the month
Decembers ATHLETE of the month is AMY MOFFATT!! Amy has been with us for over a year now but really stepped up her training and consistency over the last few months.. She has started completing WOD's RX'd and hitting PR's in various lifts.. If you haven't seen her that would be because she frequents the lunchtime WODs walking in at 1214pm during her lunch break, that's commitment!
Well done AMY and Congratulations!

Favourite cross fit movement: Deadlifts
Favourite WOD: The recent 12 days to Christmas I actually liked (and hated at the same time)
Least favourite movements: Double Unders!!
Least favourite WOD: 5km run
Favourite cross fit tool: Kettlebell (although I have developed an appreciation of chalk)
Results that you have achieved: 5kg lost, big increase in strength, completed 2 x 50 day challenges (now I'm more disciplined with food (80/20) and pretty much zero alcohol), overall body tone and reduced cm.
Occupation: New Business Owner @ The 7 Effect
Do you have a nickname? Moff
Hobbies: Netball, Touch Footy, Crossfit, catching up with friends & family
Favourite food/meal: Laksa (gluten free noodles)
3 month fitness goal: Crossfit 4-5 times a week, master double unders and get to 12 unassisted pull ups in a row
What’s something that we don’t know about you?
I'm an NT girl - grew up in Katherine
Why did you choose CrossFit?
I had tried it all! Bootcamps, PT, circuit, classes (pump, step...all the old faves), group fitness...actually I haven't ever followed the Zumba craze...too uncoordinated! But nothing really kept my interest - or kept me coming back. Love the 'gamification' element to Crossfit - always challenging, supportive and fun (after the WOD).
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go?
Make it a 30 day challenge for yourself and commit to 3-4 sessions a week and track your results!
It has taken me really a good 9 months to be consistent and I've realised the benefits. I enjoy the sessions, love the community feel, I have more energy, I'm healthier and fitter! I have surprised myself with the results... and above all else it's cheaper than therapy!!
Last PR achieved: Deadlift 105kg
Well done AMY and Congratulations!

JUNE 2014 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Well done to Matt (better know as "Mattress") for winning Athlete of the month for the month of JUNE!! Mattress has shown great dedication rocking up consistently to the AM wods and really getting out of his comfort zone in regards to training. This has shown in his results especially in regards to his conditioning/running.. Great job Matty!
Member since: October 2013
Favourite cross fit movement: Weighted pull-up and rope climbs.
Favourite WOD: Cindy.
Least favourite movements: Thrusters.
Least favourite WOD: Fran.
Favourite cross fit tool: My post workout shake and Nano shoes!
Results that you have achieved: 5km run = 23m10s weighted pull up = 24kg lost ~ 8% body fat.
Occupation: Corp and Gov IT support.
Do you have a nickname? Mattress, Smatty.
Hobbies: Wine and ports (I’m in the Barossa right now!), IT stuff and of course fitness.
Favourite food/meal: Pork chops with sweet potato and brussel sprouts, yumo!
3 month fitness goal: I’ve always been pretty thin so my goal even before Crossfit has been to add weight/muscle. I’m also trying to maintain my body fat percentage as well as increase my abysmal squat. I’m also trying to decrease my chances of injury via more stretching and mobility work.
What’s something that we don’t know about you? Via my father I’m a US citizen.
Why did you choose CrossFit? Previously I did workouts at conventional gyms and then at home. I was pretty consistent (3-4 times a week) but I wasn’t getting the results I wanted. A work colleague invited me to a charity “Try Crossfit” event at her box. I spent 15 minutes doing pull-ups, rowing, DB thrusters, kettle bell swings and box jumps, afterwards I was so destroyed I knew that Crossfit would yield results. Around 6 months later I found out Brawn was 3 streets away, I had to join!
What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go? There is a reason “Crossfitters” seem like a cult, it’s addictive because of the community and intensity. If you are looking for a no excuses, fun, results driven fitness community then Brawn is for you.
Last PR achieved: Growing up I stopped playing sports when I was in primary school and I didn’t perform any real cardio fitness work before Crossfit (other than strength training). When I started at Brawn the 400m run was a challenge. I recently did the 5km run in 23m 10s which I was really happy with.

APRIL 2014 ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to both Courtney Baldwin and Keryn Avemarg!! These girls have had great results not only with their weight loss but also strength and overall fitness results! Courts has lost a whopping 10kgs since joining Brawn in September and Keryn 5kg + in her time at the box since October. Weight loss is great but the main thing that has changed for these girls is their overall confidence which comes with an increase in overall strength and fitness.
Courts just recently completed the TRUE GRIT obstacle course which involved running over 12km mostly on soft sand and let me tell you she doesn't enjoy running but Courts great attitude not only got her through it but she also smashed out her first full rope climb!
Keryn has really come leaps and bounds over the last few months consistently hitting PRs with her last one being the strict press just last week. She's also lost over 10cm from her waist and dropped 5kg's.
Well done girls, keep up the great work!

Congratulations to Damien Heath. Damo has been at Brawn for just over 5 months and in that time has lost 14 kg's, increased his lean muscle mass and got some considerable strength and overall fitness gains. Damo has always displayed a great commitment and attitude to his training and always loves a laugh and works his ass off every WOD. You'll find Damo in the box at the later class consistently throughout the week and Saturdays.
Awesome effort Damo and keep up the great work legend!!

What words of advice would you give to anyone thinking about giving crossfit a go?
You're already half way there... Find your confidence, drive to the Box, get out the car, and walk inside. With the right attitude you'll hit goals, push your limits and form a positive social network.
Why did you choose CrossFit?
As a 'monkey child' I never had the attention span for long endurance sports. Growing up it was gymnastics and soccer; at school it was anything with speed n power.
The holistic approach to Crossfit is what caught my attention.
Crossfit not only shows my strengths, but forces me to push thru my weaknesses - and that's the part I love the most.. Im becoming holistically fit, not just a Jumping Jac
Finding a Box with positive like-minded people is invaluable. I've always had a team, and whilst Crossfit is individual in nature, the WOD is performed in a team - sweat, exhaustion n accomplishment is evident in everyone.. High fives all round n you've become one step closer to a 2.0 version of yourself.
